Our Mission

Started as the most popular and professional performing belly dance company in Singapore, with growing demands from our audience, we have ever since started to run our own belly dance classes, bollywood dance classes, and saxophone classes in our Desert Roses Studio @ 22b Upper Cross Street. We promote dance, fitness and fun among women of different ages and in different shapes. Devoted in teaching and sharing our knowledge in dance and fitness, we are determined to help the ladies who look for the integrity in body, mind and soul through active dancing exercise and achieving desired fitness while having fun!


Our aim for the studio is to bring belly dance, bollywood dance and other forms of dance to more people and let's benefit fitness, confidence and fun from this form of dance art together. Let's enjoy the music and dance together and create a healthy and exciting lifestyle together! Meantime we are also ready to bring our excellent students onto stage and let them shine in the spotlight!


Meanwhile, our professinal performance group has emerged into Desert Roses Show Productions, providing a series of professional music and dance performances besides belly dance.


Our aim for the performances is to let the audience enjoy what we enjoy doing, and to inspire our audience to search for more in music and dance arts in order to quench the thirst of our individual artistic soul and to reach a new level of understanding about life.


Our Strength (Awards)

The most popular and professional belly dance performing group in Singapore with established belly dancers and musicians. Our dancers (dance and music) have been featured on Mediacorp TV channel 5 in 2010, Desert Roses won the top 6 best arts entertainers group in Singapore with entertainers of other arts forms in the talents TV show "One Moment of Glory".


In 2012, Desert Roses Art Director Sophia represented Singapore and won international belly dance solo and group champions for Singapore, first time ever. She was interviewed on TV channel Newsasia and TV channel 8 (Good Morning Singapore).


In 2013, Desert Roses Studio successfully hosted 2013 International Singapore Golden Sands Belly Dance Festival & Competition for bringing belly dance as art and fitness form to more people around the world.


We have performed in various venues in Singapore as entertainment stage show for numerous grand ceremonies and educational programs (NAC- AEP programs) over the years.


Our strong instructors team are also the resident performers for the most famous middle eastern restaurants Shiraz, Ambrosia, Beirut/Magic Carpet in Singapore. Their splendid performances are the highlights of Singapore nightlife arts scene.

Desert Roses Belly Dance

(Founded in 2009)


In 2002, Lily first saw belly dancing at Clarke Quay by a friend and enchanted by the form of art while she was doing her Master's in Engineering in National University of Singapore. She started to learn the dance in her spare time since then. In 2004, Lily was already the regular belly dancer for the band of Al-Bedouin Middle Eastern Music Ensemble Singapore. Lily and the Drummers of the Nile (Al-Bedouin's student group) are regular fixtures of the Holistic Living Festival, having performed together for the last three Festivals. Lily has also performed for numerous events include Mercure Roxy Park Hotel Appreciation Night, NUS Prince George's Park International Festival, Light Up Bishan, Toastmasters International Anniversary Dinner, Kampung Senang World Harmony Day Celebration, Embedded Systems Conference, (Faculty of Engineering, NUS), NUS Centennial Celebration, Toastmasters Christmas Party, Little India Utsav, Dance Connection Christmas Party, and performed for the Nanyang Technological University Alumni Day.


In 2005 she quit her PhD study in engineering to pursue her passion in Belly Dance. She was involved in Kids Fest Singapore 2006, as part of Singapore’s arts college Lassalle’s performing team. She also performed for National Arts Counsel’s Arts Exposure Programs for Singapore's local primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges in Singapore together with Amit Gilboa's Middle Eastern music band Albedouin during 2005 to 2009. She has also performed in Canadian International school and American International School in Singapore and choreographed dance for United World College's (UWC) students' performance for the school's Racial Harmony Day .


Lily has also performed as a Middle Eastern percussionist; she assisted conducting teambuilding workshops for such companies as IBM, OCBC as well as for 500 students at Nanyang Primary School, and performed as a drummer at the Pulses of the Northeast Festival in July 2004.


Lily has also performed as a salsa dancer at events such as the Junior Chamber International Operation hope Fundraiser, NUS Prince George's Park International Festival and Citigroup Latin Fiesta. She has also assisted teaching Salsa in GSS-NUS and in Philips, as well as some other private parties. She also taught Belly Dance/Salsa in NUS Prince Georges Park-international student’s hostel during 2005- 2006.


Lily also joined Al-Bedouin drummers and other dancers in the Vida Condominium TV commercial. Lily has also appeared on these Mediacorp TV programs: "Focus", "It's a small world", "Good morning Singapore", " 综艺Go live" "Hooked on Hanyu" for her endeavors as a passionate immigrate promoting arts and international harmony and appeared on many newspapers and magazines as well over the years.


Internationally, early in 2005, Lily took private classes in Turkey and was invited to perform in Israel for kids, and also participated in the performance for Queensland Poetry Festival in Brisbane, Australia. She has performed with many international belly dance artists. In 2009 to 2013 she bridged master workshops between Turkey, Singapore and China to promote international arts communication and culture exchange. She also assisted culture exchange between Abu Dhabi and Singapore for Abu Dhabi Summer Festival in 2009.


In 2009, she also founded Desert Roses Belly Dance: Desert Roses Dance Studio together with Desert Roses Performance Group to promote belly dance as a lifestyle to benefit more women in body, mind and soul.


To date, Desert Roses Dance Studio has taught thousands of students and fostered international belly dance champion for Singapore, also many highly qualified instructors working all over in Singapore. She has inspired belly dance art industry in Singapore in many ways towards a more prosperous direction to enrich Singapore's local life.


Desert Roses performance group has also grown into Desert Roses Show Productions and absorbed more performing artists highly professional in their music and dance performance.

Dance Training (2002- 2006):

Lily began her belly dance training in Singapore under established dancers Claribel Ng, Fiona Hoo (Desert Rhythm) and Belinda Tan (Sahara Sundance) and also received private training in Istanbul from internationally acclaimed dancer Hale Cakir (Hale Sultan).

Sophia Meng

Art director




A world class belly dance performer and master, Sophia Meng Lanyu is a trained Chinese folk dancer since young with a strong dance background. She was in the dance performance team since primary 3 and was promoted to be the choreographer and team leader since her middle school. Her team has won countless awards in school and also in the city. She graduated with a dance diploma in Tianjin University of Sport in China. She obtained both dance instructor certificate and yoga instructor certificate, and worked as a fulltime dance instructor and yoga instructor in China during college.  


She has been performing in Middle Eastern dance (belly dance) since 2005 after training in China. Later in Singapore she also learned from local teachers as well as workshops with Dina and other Egyptian masters.


She is currently the Art Director and core instructor of Desert Roses Belly Dance where she both leads the performance troupe as well as trains students. She had taught belly dance at the National University of Singapore and new classes were added to due to the popular demand from students.  She has also been invited every year to give one day belly dance workshop in Australian International School since 2010 and received appreciation email from the school.


In June 2010, she was invited to perform overseas in Abu Dhabi for summer in Abu Dhabi festival for 1 month to showcase Chinese Dance together with Malay and Indian dancers to represent the beauty and harmony of Singapore culture and was interviewed and reported in local newspaper.


She has been the residential professional belly dance performers in three authentic Middle Eastern restaurants respectively from 2009, where the most famous belly dancers in Singapore perform throughout the week.


From 2009 to the present, Sophia has performed in many NAC-AEP programmes in local schools and countless other company function performances outside of schools, highlights include F1 Singapore 2009.


In 2010, Sophia joined Mediacorp channel 5’s talent show One Moment of Glory (OMG) with other two instructors from Desert Roses Belly Dance Singapore. Desert Roses maintained in the program for 11 episodes and won the top 6 in the talents competition. Sophia and friends were invited to perform for the biggest countdown party of 2010 by channel 5 and also performed with many TV celebrities in President’s Charity Show 2010.


She was awarded first runner up and group championship, in Asia Global belly dance competition 2012 at Singapore Street Festival.


In 2012, she represented Singapore and won the first international belly dance champion in Nagwa Fouad Competition in Seoul, Korea. She was interviewed in Channel Newsasia and Channel 8 (Good Morning Singapore) for bringing the awards back to Singapore.


She is young and talented, yet very experienced and inspiring belly dance instructor. She is extremely good at stage performance, has wowed audience with her graceful moves and extreme flexibility. Her love for dance and students will inspire her students to explore more in belly dance with her.

Grace Meng Lanqing is an international award winning makeup artist based in Singapore. With years of experience working with TV celebrities in Singapore, she also had the honour to do media makeup for Singapore President and other important public figures. Her expertise includes professional everyday makeup, TV makeup, stage makeup and wedding makeup. She is one of the most sought-after makeup artists in Singapore. Grew up in China, Grace Meng has shown her talents in drawing and painting since her childhood. She developed such passion and love in beauty and devoted herself in learning arts and design. She took a job in bridal makeup and hairstyling for Lubinhua Wedding Studio in 2005. She obtained diploma in Basic Makeup Skills from Beijing Maogeping Makeup School in 2007. In 2008 she came to Singapore to further her study. She obtained her the diploma in professional makeup from the School of Make Up and the diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Make up in 2009.


In 2009, she won the title of “Winner of 1st China International Artistic Manicure Open Competition” and “Winner of Shanghai International Beauty and Manicure Competition”.


She worked in Mediacorp TV Singapore as a makeup artist from 2010 to 2014. It was then she had the previlage to work closely with many TV celebrities in Singapore and got involved in many national and international events.


She started to work as the art instructor and image consultant for Desert Roses Belly Dance from November 2014 and continues to pursue her passion in makeup and creative makeover for common crowds and dancers.


Grace Meng is mutiltalented in arts, besides the fact she is an accompolished makeup artist and master, she is also a popular belly dance instructor and performer for Desert Roses Belly Dance.
